Teacher Spotlight

Meet some of our master educators!

 

William Licopoli

William Licopoli holds a Bachelor’s degree in Earth & Environmental Sciences, as well as a Master’s degree in Education technology. He has been teaching for over 19 years, with subjects including Astronomy, Environmental Science, Geology and Oceanography. In addition to his background, William is also certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and is a Meteorologist in the United States Marine Corps. William also enjoys hockey, board games and caring for the environment.


Amy Dyment

Amy Dyment holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a Master’s degree in Math Education. She has been teaching high school level mathematics for 26 years, and has been teaching with VHS  for 9 years.  One thing she loves about teaching with VHS is the ability  to teach students from anywhere in the world. She has taught VHS courses from places such as Nairobi Kenya, and Switzerland. Amy enjoys outside activities such as cycling, skiing and swimming. She also enjoys playing the piano.


Karen Orfitelli

Karen Orfitelli holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and is a highly qualified* English Language Arts teacher.  She has over 25 years of classroom experience and just over 8 years of experience teaching online at The Virtual High School.  Karen has taught English, literature, and writing in the Cape Cod and Connecticut area, as well as written and published more than 300 articles in various magazines!  Karen was the 1994 first place winner of the Guideposts Writing Workshop and the Great New England Coast Essay Contest.  Outside the classroom, Karen enjoys photography, quilting and travel.

Brett Penza

Brett Penza is a highly qualified* Technology teacher for The Virtual High School.  He holds a Master’s degree in Technology and Education. With over 20 years of Information Technology experience in the private sector, and 14 years’ experience as a high school educator, Brett brings extensive knowledge and experience to his online classrooms.  Brett’s goal is to inspire his students to share in this exciting time in our educational history.  He firmly believes that all students can succeed when they remain focused and disciplined in achieving goals.


Dorothy Maxwell

Dorothy Maxwell holds a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from the University of Maine in Educational Leadership. Dorothy has taught business subjects for many years at Sacopee Valley High School in South Hiram, Maine. She recently celebrated her 10th anniversary as a VHS Site Coordinator and teacher. Dorothy has also taught courses at the graduate level in the area of business education. She has served as a teacher mentor in her school district as well as at VHS.

Dorothy is a former Maine Teacher of the Year and has received a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. She has also received the Secondary Teacher of the Year Award from the National Business Education Association. Dorothy is a published author in the area of business and communication. She has written seven books in this area and authored many published articles in professional journals.  

She describes herself as a “lifelong learner who enjoys helping others learn.”


Justin Cannady

Justin Cannady is one of our highly qualified* Math and Computer Science teachers.  He has been teaching in the classroom for over 8 years and online for 2 years. Justin holds a Master’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education and is currently working toward his Educational Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of West Florida. He is a National Board Certified Teacher in Mathematics. Justin is currently teaching Advanced Placement Computer Science for The Virtual High School. He has used his love for learning to truly inspire his students! 


Niki Bray

Niki Bray holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration. She is also working on her dissertation in Instructional Design & Technology with plans to graduate with her doctorate in May 2017. In addition to her educational background, she is a National Board Certified Teacher in Physical Education. She highly qualified* in both Biology and Physical Education. Niki has over 16 years of experience teaching middle school science, high school biology, Physical Science, Physical Education and online Health and Fitness.  In Niki’s first online class, she learned to appreciate the flexibility and control that she had as a student over her own learning experience. Niki believes each student begins their journey in a different place and she enjoys helping students find their path.


Kara Staunton-Shron

Kara Staunton-Shron attended Boston College for a BA in Political Science and Irish Studies, Cambridge College for her Masters in Education and Southern Connecticut State University for a Masters in Library and Information Science.  She holds certification in both Social Studies and Library Science.  She is currently the librarian at her high school, a job she loves, as it combines her love of reading and technology.  With over 20 years of teaching experience, she is one of our highly qualified* Social Studies teachers. She just celebrated her 10 year anniversary with VHS.  She is married with three children.  Some of her hobbies outside of the classroom include reading, knitting, yoga and running.


Virginia Davis

Virginia Davis holds a Bachelor’s degree in English, Spanish and Portuguese. With over 20 years of teaching experience, she is highly qualified* in teaching new languages. Virginia brings her passion for traveling the world to the classroom. She has studied many foreign languages including Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, and Russian. While traveling, Virginia has gained experience teaching a variety of students.  This experience has given her the opportunity to learn aspects of numerous world cultures, and bring that knowledge to her classroom. Her goal is through her teaching is to inspire students to be able to travel the world with the benefit of knowing at least one second language.


Virginia Asciolla

Virginia Asciolla has taught with VHS for 10 years and in Culpeper County Virginia for 16 years. Some of the VHS courses that Virginia has taught include Biotechnology, The Human Body, Bioethics and AP Biology. She is also a Faculty Advisor for VHS. In her spare time, Virginia has become an active member of the DIY Biology Maker community. She is also extremely passionate about the environment and sustainability. Virginia finds great satisfaction knowing that she has helped expand the horizons of her students through teaching.
